GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

HopFed Bancorp Inc was incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware in May 1997. The Company serves as a savings and loan holding company of Heritage Bank or the Bank. The Bank is a federally chartered stock savings bank operating in the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. The business of the Bank mainly consists of attracting deposits from the general public and investing such deposits in loans secured by single family residential real estate and investment securities, including U.S. Government and agency securities, municipal and corporate bonds, collateralized mortgages obligations, and mortgage-backed securities. The Bank also originates single-family residential/construction loans and multi-family and commercial real estate loans, as well as loans secured by deposits, other consumer loans and commercial loans. The Bank emphasizes the origination of residential real estate loans with adjustable interest rates and other assets, which are responsive to changes in interest rates and allow the bank to more closely match the interest rate maturation of its assets and liabilities. The Bank faces competition both in originating mortgage and other loans and in attracting deposits. It competes for loans mainly on the basis of interest rates, the types of loans it originates, the deposit products it offers and the quality of services it provides to borrowers. Its competition in originating real estate loans comes mainly from other savings institutions, commercial banks and mortgage bankers making loans secured by real estate located in the Bank's market area. Commercial banks, credit unions and finance companies provide vigorous competition in consumer lending. The Company is subject to examination, supervision, and comprehensive regulation by various federal agencies, including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
