Business Description

Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation Limited produces iron, steel, vanadium, ferro-alloys and various carbonaceous products. Highveld's steel-making operation has been designed specifically to beneficiate the titaniferous magnetite ore mined at its Mapochs Mine in the Roossenekal area. The steel-making operation coproduces vanadium slag. Africa remains Highveld's major market. The corporation is the main producer of medium and heavy structural sections and thick plate in South Africa. Steel is converted into a variety of hot rolled steel products and continuously cast steel products. Plate is used in the construction industry for the fabrication of girders, support structures and bridges; in the fabrication industry for the manufacture of liquid storage facilities, including tanks, pressure vessels, boilers and in the ship-building industry. Coil is used in the construction industry for cladding of buildings and bridges; in the fabrication industry for production of cold-formed sections, tube and pipe; in the engineering industry; and in the ship-building industry. Structural sections are used in the construction industry for support and structural steel frameworks; in the fabrication industry for the manufacture of rail cars, trucks and trailers; and in the transport and mining industries for light gauge rail tracks. Billets are used in the steel-making industry for rerolling into wire rods, fencing and reinforcing bar. Slabs are used for the production of plate and coil. Vanadium bearing slag is co-produced with iron from the magnetite iron ore at the integrated Steelworks operation. Vanadium is converted into a variety of products. Highveld markets its products to niche markets and industry segments, where steel product advertisements complement its marketing efforts.
