Hampton Roads Bankshares Inc, a Virginia corporation incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia on February 28, 2001. The Company conducts its operations through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, Bank of Hampton Roads or BOHR. BOHR is a Virginia state-chartered commercial bank with approximately 17 full-service offices in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia, including six offices in the city of Chesapeake, three offices in the city of Norfolk, six offices in the city of Virginia Beach, one office in Emporia, and one office in the city of Suffolk. BOHR has 10 full-service offices located in Richmond, Virginia and the Northeastern and Research Triangle regions of North Carolina that does business as Gateway Bank. The Company is a financial services holding company. It is engaged in a general community and commercial banking business, targeting the banking needs of individuals and small to medium sized businesses in its main service areas which include Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland. It offers all traditional loans and deposit banking services. It is involved in the construction and real estate lending markets and extends both personal and commercial credit. The Company's loans consist of varying terms and could be secured or unsecured. Loans to individuals are for personal, household, and family purposes. Loans to businesses are for such purposes as working capital, plant expansion, and equipment purchases. Real estate loans are made for both residential and commercial properties. It offers a range of interest-bearing and non-interest-bearing deposit accounts, including commercial and retail checking accounts, money market accounts, individual retirement accounts, regular interest-bearing savings accounts, and certificates of deposit with a range of maturity date options. The Company offers other banking-related specialized products and services to its customers, such as travelers' checks, coin counters, wire services and safe deposit box services Co. In addition to the banking operations the company is also engaged in two other segments; Mortgage and Corporate. Gateway Bank Mortgage, Inc. The Mortgage segment comprises of its mortgage banking services such as originating and processing mortgage loans for sale to the secondary market. Corporate segment includes the holding Company, and immaterial passive operating results from inactive subsidiary units. The Company competes with large national and regional financial institutions, savings banks and other independent community banks, as well as credit unions, consumer finance companies, mortgage companies, loan production offices, and insurance companies. The Company is subject to supervision by several governmental regulatory agencies.
