GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Hallador Energy Co was founded as a Colorado corporation in July 1951 under the name of Kimbark Oil and Gas Company. The Company is engaged in the coal production. The largest portion of its business is comprised of coal mining in the state of Indiana through Sunrise Coal, LLC (a wholly-owned subsidiary) serving the electric power generation industry. It also own a 45% equity interest in Savoy Energy, L.P., a private oil and gas exploration company with operations in Michigan and a 50% interest in Sunrise Energy, LLC, a private gas exploration company with operations in Indiana. The Company accounts for its investments in Savoy and Sunrise Energy using the equity method. Its largest contributor to revenue and earnings is the Carlisle underground coal mine located in western Indiana, about 30 miles south of Terre Haute. Over 81% of its coal sales are to customers with large scrubbed coal-fired power plants in the state of Indiana. Its mines and coal reserves are strategically located in close proximity to its main customers. The Company has access to its main customers directly through either the CSX Corporation or through the Indiana Rail Road, majority owned by the CSX. During 2013 about 12% of its sales were to customers in Central Florida almost 1,000 miles away. Its customers include Duke Energy Corporation, Hoosier Energy, and Indianapolis Power & Light Company. It competes with large producers as well as small producers. The Company is subject to various federal, state and local laws and regulations.
