The Company is organized and conducts its operations to qualify as a REIT under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. The Company is an externally-managed mortgage REIT that invests mainly in adjustable-rate and hybrid adjustable-rate single-family residential mortgage pass-through securities guaranteed or issued by a U.S. Government agency such as the Government National Mortgage Association 'Ginnie Mae', or by a U.S. Government-sponsored entity such as the Federal National Mortgage Association, 'Fannie Mae', and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, 'Freddie Mac'. In acquiring agency securities, the Company competes with mortgage REITs, mortgage finance and specialty finance companies, savings and loan associations, banks, mortgage bankers, insurance companies, mutual funds, institutional investors, investment banking firms, other lenders, governmental bodies and other entities.
