Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. (HTSI) is a North Carolina based retailer, which operates grocery stores and pharmacies in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic U.S. On July 9, 2013, The Kroger Co., another large retailer, announced that it was acquiring Harris Teeter for $49.38 cash per share in a $2.5 billion merger. The merger was approved in September of 2013, and the FTC approved the transaction on January 17, 2014. The merger was completed on January 28, 2014. The Fund earned a 2.66% return on this position.

The Company changed its name from Ruddick Corporation to Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. on April 2, 2012. Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc with its subsidiaries in addition to its retail stores, Harris Teeter also owns grocery, frozen food, and perishable distribution centers in Greensboro, NC and Indian Trail, NC, as well as a dairy in High Point, NC. Supermarkets offer a full assortment of groceries, produce, meat and seafood, delicatessen items, bakery items, wines and non-food items such as health and beauty care, general merchandise and floral. These supermarkets are supported by two company-owned distribution centers and one company-owned dairy production facility. Until November 7, 2011, the Company was also engaged in the manufacturing and distribution of industrial sewing thread through its American & Efird business. The Company competes with local, regional and national food chains along with independent merchants & also with Discount retailers.
