GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

IMAX Corporation, a Canadian corporation, was incorporated in 1967. The Company is an entertainment technology company, specializing in motion picture technologies and presentations. The Company's principal business is the design and manufacture of premium theater systems and the sale, lease or contribution to customers under revenue-sharing arrangements of IMAX theater systems. The Company is based on proprietary and patented technology developed over the course of the Company's 44-year history. The Company's customers who purchase, lease or otherwise acquire the IMAX theater systems are theater exhibitors that operate commercial theaters (particularly multiplexes), museums, science centers, or destination entertainment sites. IMAX theater systems combine: (I) IMAX DMR (Digital Re-Mastering) movie conversion technology, which results in higher image and sound fidelity than conventional cinema experiences; (ii) advanced, high-resolution projectors with specialized equipment and automated theater control systems, which result in significantly more contrast and brightness than conventional theater systems; (iii) sound system components, which result in more expansive sound imagery and pinpointed origination of sound to any specific spot in an IMAX theater; (iv) large screens and proprietary theater geometry, which result in a substantially larger field of view so that the screen extends to the edge of a viewer's peripheral vision and creates more realistic images; and (v) specialized theater acoustics, which results in a four-fold reduction in background noise. The IMAX systems segment designs, manufactures, sells or leases IMAX theater projection system equipment. The theater system maintenance segment maintains IMAX theater projection system equipment in the IMAX theater network. The joint revenue sharing arrangements segment installs IMAX theater projection system equipment to an exhibitor in exchange for a certain percentage of box-office and concession revenue. The film production and IMAX DMR segment produces films and performs film re-mastering services. The film distribution segment distributes films for which the Company has distribution rights. The film post-production segment provides film post-production and film print services. The other segment includes certain IMAX theaters that the Company owns and operates, camera rentals and other miscellaneous items.
