GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Immersion Corp is a software licensing company. It is engaged in creation, design, development, and licensing of patented haptic innovations and software that allow people to use their sense of touch more fully when operating digital devices.

Immersion Corp was incorporated in 1993 in California and reincorporated in Delaware in 1999. The Company completed its initial public offering on November 12, 1999. The Company designs, develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a range of hardware and software technologies and products that enhance digital devices with touch interaction. The Company provides haptic technologies that allow people to use their sense of touch when operating various digital devices. The Company is focused on marketing and business development activities in mobile communications and consumer electronics, automotive, gaming, commercial and industrial, and medical. In those markets the Company license its software and IP to manufacturers for use in products sold under their own brand names. Haptics enhances the user through improved usability, enhanced realism, enriched communications and restoration of mechanical feel. The Company licenses its software to original equipment manufacturers or their suppliers who then include the Company's software in products sold under their own brand names. The Company licenses its software under the TouchSense brands for the target markets; TouchSense 1000, TouchSense 2000, TouchSense 3000, TouchSEnse 4000, TouchSense 5000 and Integrator. In addition to licensing the software, the Company also offer patent licenses to those customers who wish to develop their own proprietary haptic implementations. For both TouchSense and patent licensees, the Company offers its expertise to help them design and integrate touch effects into their products. The Company's licensees include Samsung, Motorola, LG Electronics, Fujitsu, NEC, Xiaomi, Toshiba, as well as integrated circuit manufacturers such as Texas Instruments and Atmel. The Company licensed its patents to Microsoft Corporation for use in its gaming products and to Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. for use in its legacy and current PlayStation console gaming products. The Company also licensed its patents to other gaming peripheral manufacturers and distributors including Logitech and Mad Catz, Inc., to bring haptic technology to PC platforms including Microsoft Windows operating systems, as well as to video game consoles. The Company also provides TouchSense software and patent licenses to automotive component suppliers like ALPS Electric Company Ltd., Methode Electronics, Inc., Visteon, SMK Corporation, Tokai Rika Co., Ltd., and Panasonic Corporation. The Company's competition derives from decisions made by internal design groups at the Company's OEM customers and potential OEM customers. The Company rely on a combination of patents, copyrights, trade secrets, trademarks, nondisclosure agreements with employees and third parties, licensing arrangements, and other contractual agreements with third parties to protect its IP.
