GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

The Company is the provider of optical networking systems based on Photonic Integration technology. It provides products across the entire range of multi-wavelength optical communications applications, from metro access and metro core through long-haul and submarine transmission. Infinera created its commercially-deployed, large-scale photonic integrated circuit or PIC. The Company's PICs transmit and receive 100 Gigabits per second of optical capacity and incorporate the functionality of over 60 discrete optical devices into a pair of indium phosphide chips approximately the size of a child's fingernail. It uses these PICs in its optical telecom system, the Digital Transport Node System. The Company's products are Infinera DTN Platform; Infinera DTN for Submarine Network Applications; Infinera Line System 2; Infinera ATN Platform; Infinera IQ Network Operating System and Management Suite and Infinera Management Suite. It has invested time and capital to develop and improve the manufacturing process that it uses to produce and package its PICs. It also has invested in automating its manufacturing process and in training and maintaining the quality of its manufacturing workforce. The Company markets and sells its products and related support services mainly through its direct sales force, supported by marketing and product management personnel. It might also use distribution or support partners to enter new markets or when requested by a potential customer. As of December 28, 2013, it has sold its products for deployment in the optical networks of 131 customers worldwide, including CenturyLink, Colt, Cox Communications, DANTE, Deutsche Telekom, Equinix, Interoute, KDDI, Level 3, NTT, OTE, Pacnet, Rostelecom, Telefonica, TeliaSonera International and Vodafone. The Company's customers include Cox Communications, Deutsche Telekom, Global Crossing, Interoute and Level 3. The Company's competitors include: Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena Corporation, Cisco Systems, Coriant, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., and ZTE Corporation. The Company's trademarks are "Infinera," "Infinera DTN," "Infinera DTN-X," "ATN," "Infinera Intelligent Transport Network," "FlexCoherent," "Infinera Instant Bandwidth". The Company's business and operations are subject to environmental laws in various jurisdictions around the world including the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations adopted by the European Union.
