GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

International Paper Co produces and distributes printing paper, packaging, forest products, and chemical products. The Company operates in four segments namely industrial packaging; printing papers; consumer packaging, and distribution.

International Paper Co is a New York corporation, incorporated in 1941 as the successor to the New York Corporation of the same name organized in 1898. The Company is a paper and packaging company with markets and manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It operates approximately 24 pulp, paper and packaging mills, 169 converting and packaging plants, 16 recycling plants and three bag facilities. The Company's businesses are separated into three segments namely Industrial Packaging, Printing Papers, and Consumer Packaging. International Paper segment is a manufacturer of containerboard in the United States. Its products include linerboard, medium, whitetop, recycled linerboard, recycled medium and saturating kraft. The International Paper segment produces printing and writing papers. Products in this segment include uncoated papers and pulp. End use applications include advertising and promotional materials such as brochures, pamphlets, greeting cards, books, annual reports and direct mail. Uncoated papers are sold under private label and International Paper brand names. Industrial Packaging products are closely correlated with non-durable industrial goods production, as well as with demand for processed foods, poultry, meat and agricultural products. The Company's products compete with similar products produced by other forest products companies. It also competes, in some instances, with companies in other industries and against substitutes for wood and wood-fiber products. Its trademarks include Hammermill, Springhill, Williamsburg, Postmark, Accent, Great White, Chamex, Ballet, Rey, Pol, and Svetocopy. The Company's operations are subject to U.S. and non-U.S. laws and regulations relating to the environment, health and safety.
