IXYS Announces Digitally Controlled Surge Voltage, Inrush, and Short-Circuit Protection Design for Battery Powered Devices

LEIDEN, Netherlands and MILPITAS, Calif., March 28, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ:IXYS), a global manufacturer of power semiconductors and ICs for energy efficiency, power management, transportation, medical, and motor control applications, today announced a digital power design that demonstrates surge voltage protection as well as inrush current and short-circuit protection for battery powered devices based on the Zilog MCU.
This reference design demonstrates the cost effective use of proven Zilog MCU for digital power control, integrating IXYS power and digital control software in one ready to use design. Compared to hardware only solutions, digital control ones help simplify the system and provide power designers with a greater flexibility at the same time. This design makes use of the Z8F3281 microcontroller (MCU) from Zilog, Inc. for digital control. It protects the load from transient voltage spikes emanating from the battery and also safeguards the battery from inrush current and short-circuit conditions at the load. The load current can range from 0 to 20A, and the output voltage is programmable from 12V to 48V, using the MCU or an external resistor divider. The inrush current limit is set at 30A, and the surge voltage protection is up to 150V. At a load current of 20A, the efficiency is at 99 percent in the idle state. When the output voltage is at 24V, it becomes 99.5 and 98 percent at 48V and 12V, respectively. The design consists of a power component board (3.6 x 2.6 x 1.6 inches) and microcontroller module (1.3 x 1 x 0.5 inches). The schematics and bills of material are also available. IXYS Introduces a New Range of Ultra-Compact ‘Wespack’ Rectifier Diodes with Record Current Rating and Lightest Weight

LEIDEN, Netherlands and CHIPPENHAM, United Kingdom, March 21, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ:IXYS) an international power and IC semiconductor company, today announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, IXYS UK Westcode Ltd., launched a new range of ‘Wespack’ rectifier diodes in ultra-compact housings. The diodes are in a new package size which offers maximum power density without compromising on performance and quality. Available with voltage from 1.2 kV to 2.8 kV and average current ratings from 1730A to 2340A at a case temperature of 55C, these new diodes offer the highest possible power density for diodes in this class.
The new device uses IXYS proprietary device design and is packaged in a low profile ‘Wespack’ outline. The structure offers both optimised transient thermal conditions and overall robustness while limiting the overall package size. The optimal thermal design enhances performance and presents excellent transient thermal and surge current ratings, while the low profile package minimises the thermal path from the silicon to the heat sink. At 135 grams, the new package is 60 percent lighter and smaller than older designed parts with the same die and offers 13 percent higher average current rating. “These new diodes are the ultimate in packaging for minimising material and maximising performance and represent a continuation of IXYS’ philosophy of less package and more power. For the customer they are not only smaller with improved rating, when compared to old designs, but also lower cost. Using less material is a bonus when trying to minimise the environmental impact of power system design realisation,” commented Frank Wakeman, IXYS UK’s Marketing and Technical Support Manager. The new diodes are available in six voltage classes at three current ratings. Designations are W2340JK120 for the average current 2340A and 1200V device, W2340JK150 for the average current rating 2340A and 1500V device, W1980JK180 for the average current 1980A and 1800V device, W1980JK220 for the average current rating 1980A and 2200V device, W1730JK240 for the average current 1730A and 2400V device and W1730JK280 for the average current rating 1730A and 2800V device. Typical applications include front end rectifiers and bridges, DC power supplies, utilities and chemical power supplies, particularly in applications where weight and performance need to be optimised. IXYS Introduces a New High Performance 1.7 kV Press-Pack IGBT with Record Power Density

LEIDEN, Netherlands and CHIPPENHAM, United Kingdom, March 14, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ:IXYS) an international power and IC semiconductor company, today announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, IXYS UK Westcode Ltd., launched its first 1.7 kV press-pack IGBT. The new device is reverse conducting with a fully rated diode integrated in the package and represents the first in a planned range of 1.7 kV devices. The device has a DC current rating of 960A and repetitive peak collector current of 1920A with a continuous DC voltage of 900V.
The 1.7 kV device is based on IXYS’ IGBT technology, and is constructed in a proprietary rugged and thermally efficient package. The device is encapsulated in a fully hermetic industry standard metal and ceramic package. The 26 mm thick package has a 63 mm electrode contact diameter with an industry standard overall diameter of 100 mm. With a package weight of only 0.65 kilograms, the new device offers unrivalled power density due to its double side cooling capabilities. The robust internal construction is bond free with the individual die directly pressure contacted through metallic pressure plates to the external copper electrodes. The direct bond free contact ensures high reliability and unrivalled thermal cycling properties, far exceeding those of a conventionally packaged plastic package module. The package design is based on IXYS UK’s well established and proven technology, with the same advantages of enhanced rupture capability, resisting more than ten times the short circuit energy of a conventional plastic packaged module device and the additional advantage that the device is virtually guaranteed to fail to a stable short circuit.
These unique properties make the new device an ideal solution where high reliability, maximum power density and predictable failure are important. The device is suited for harsh environments and where maintenance access is difficult, such as offshore marine and wind. The hermetic structure and high rupture resistance are properties which are particularly relevant in harsh environments where explosive failure and plasma leak are unacceptable, such as mining, gas and oil instillations.
“This device is the first of a planned range of 1.7 kV products with prospective current ratings from 600A to 2500A. Parts will be available both reverse conducting and symmetrical blocking without an integral diode. As the product will use the same mechanical packaging as IXYS UK’s established 2.5 kV parts, introduction time cycles can be very short and customers requiring other rating options should consult our factory,” commented Frank Wakeman, IXYS UK’s Marketing and Technical Support Manager. The part number for this reverse-conducting press-pack IGBT is T0960VC17G. Typical applications for this device include: traction such as light rail, trams, trolley bus and other electric vehicles; AC drives for harsh environments such as mining, marine and offshore, gas and oil installations; renewable energy for wind turbines, hydro generation, wave generation and solar; plus any application where high power density and reliability are key considerations.
