While investing, I like to look for companies with low price-to-book (P/B) ratios. Of the portfolios tracked by GuruFocus, the “Top 25 Historical Low P/B Ratio Companies” portfolio has performed the best, and is outperforming the S&P 500 by 24.02 percent since its inception in 2010. The book value of the company is the value of its assets minus its liabilities, essentially what is left if the company is liquidated. Buying a stock with a P/B ratio below 1 means that you are buying the company below its liquidation value. Of course it is not that simple, people are not likely to buy every company with a low P/B ratio just to liquidate it and keep the difference. There are costs involved with the process, and it is likely that thousands of lives would be devastated due to job losses. The value of the assets could also be in question. They could be overstated and inventories would likely have to be written down. A liquidation sale typically involves items at a deeply discounted price. Also if a company has a low P/B ratio, it might be reflecting the expectations of a decreasing book value. Read more...

Korea Electric Power Corporation was incorporated on January 1, 1982. The Company is engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and development of electric power resources in the Republic of Korea. Through its six consolidated generation subsidiaries, the Company currently transmits and distributes substantially all of the electricity in Korea. The generation capacity installed or under construction of the electricity suppliers in the 20 districts amounted to approximately 1% of the generation capacity of the Company's generation subsidiaries as of April 30, 2009. As of December 31, 2008, the Company's transmission system consisted of approximately 29,929 circuit kilometers of lines of 765 kilovolts and others including high voltage direct current lines, and it had 693 substations with an aggregate installed transformer capacity of 237,300 megavolt-amperes. In 2008, the Company sold 385 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. Of the 405 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity it purchased in 2008, 36.1% was generated by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., or KHNP, its wholly-owned nuclear and hydroelectric power generation subsidiary. Through KHNP, the Company currently operates 20 nuclear-fuel generation units. The Company also wholly owns its five non-nuclear generation subsidiaries, Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd., Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd., Korea Western Power Co., Ltd., Korea Southern Power Co., Ltd. and Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd., each of which is incorporated in Korea. The Company's distribution system consists of 96,866 megavolt-amperes of transformer capacity and approximately eight million units of support with a total line length of 410,015 circuit kilometers. Its operations are subject to various laws and regulations relating to environmental protection and safety.
