GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

CarMax Inc together with its wholly owned subsidiaries is engaged in sales of used vehicles in the United States. It operates in two reportable segments: CarMax Sales Operations and CarMax Auto Finance.

CarMax Inc was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1996. The Company along with its subsidiaries is engaged in the sales of used vehicles in the United States. It operates in two reportable segments: CarMax Sales Operations and CarMax Auto Finance. Its CarMax Sales Operations segment consists of all aspects of its auto merchandising and service operations, excluding financing provided by CAF. Its CAF segment consists of its own finance operation that provides vehicle financing through CarMax superstores. It offers used vehicles at low prices using a customer-friendly sales process in its sales facility. The CarMax consumer offer provides customers to shop for vehicles the same way it shops for items at other retailers. It provides customers with related products and services, including the financing of vehicle purchases through CarMax Auto Finance, or CAF, its own finance operation, and third-party financing providers; the sale of extended service plans and accessories; the appraisal and purchase vehicles directly from consumers; and vehicle repair service. It offers customers a selection of models of used vehicles, including both domestic and imported vehicles, at competitive prices. An integral part of its used car consumer offer is the reconditioning process. This process includes a CarMax Quality Inspection of the engine and all other systems, including cooling, fuel, drivetrain, transmission, electronics, suspension, brakes, steering, air conditioning and other equipment, as well as the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Vehicles purchased through its in-store appraisal process that do not meet its retail standards are sold through on-site wholesale auctions. It offers customers a range of financing alternatives, which enhances the CarMax consumer offer. It sells these plans on behalf of unrelated third parties that are the main obligors. The U.S. used car marketplace is fragmented and competitive. The Company's competitors are the franchised auto dealers, who sell the majority of late-model used vehicles. It is subject to a variety of federal, state and local laws and regulations that pertain to the environment.

Guru Investment Theses on CarMax Inc

Ruane Cunniff Comments on Carmax - Jul 13, 2016

Carmax (NYSE:KMX) has turned the once-notorious used car business on its head with no-haggle pricing on products that have been rigorously reconditioned and certified. The biggest used car dealer in the country and the only one with a national brand, Carmax has the opportunity to roughly double its store count while increasing same-store sales in the years ahead. We have followed Carmax for more than a decade and we particularly like the fact that others have tried to copy its business model without success. The shares were weak during the quarter due to concerns that a slowing auto cycle could depress used car prices, as well as the emergence of some new competitors on the internet. However, we think Carmax has a terrific opportunity to capitalize on Internet selling. We bought Carmax shares at a reasonable 15x P/E multiple because we believe whatever the short-term fluctuations in used car pricing, the company’s consumer appeal is quite strong.

Baron Funds Comments on CarMax Inc - Mar 23, 2015

Shares of CarMax, Inc. (KMX), the nation’s largest used car retailer, rose sharply during the fourth quarter after reporting strong results, highlighted by accelerating sales and earnings growth. Demand for the company’s high quality, late model vehicle inventory has remained strong and coincides with resurgent new car sales and an attractive financing environment. In addition, shares have been buoyed recently by the announcement of a large share repurchase program that we believe will be significantly accretive to earnings over the next several years.
