GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Top Ranked Articles about The Kroger Co

Investing in the Future of Retail Retailers must adapt or die
If you have been following my retail articles closely, you may have noticed I have been advising investors to be cautious about investing in retail majors. There are several reasons why the current status quo in the retail segment is going to be disrupted over the next several years. One of the primary reasons is e-commerce; more specifically, Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) disruption of the space. Read more...
Why Kroger May Not Be Eyeing Whole Foods Would Kroger want to buy a load of issues when their own organic brand is healthy and growing?
Whole Foods' (NASDAQ:WFM) stock spiked up after rumors about a Kroger (NYSE:KRacquisition started swirling in the market. Whole Foods has been going through a very difficult environment as the company has had to swim through a sea of bad news, such as price gouging and a recent warning letter from Food and Drug Administration after the regulatory body found "serious violations" during an inspection of the company's food preparation facility in Massachusetts. Of the top five retailers in the United States, Kroger (NYSE:KR) is the cheapest, trading at a mere 0.26 times its sales. Has Whole Foods Compromised Its Brand? With the launch of 365, Whole Foods may be headed in the wrong direction
Grocery giant Whole Foods’ (NASDAQ:WFM) fortunes have swung in the opposite direction with respect to comparable store sales, which have been declining for four straight quarters. After staying above the fold during the 2013-2015 period, comps went negative during fourth quarter of the last fiscal, a trend the company is yet to break. The stock has been trading in a tight range of $28 to $34 since October 2015, as if the market is still unsure of what to do with the company. Read more...
