GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Keeley All-Cap Value Fund Comments on Kohl's Corp - Sep 17, 2015

Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE:KSS) was the largest detractor during the quarter and accounted for the majority of our selection challenges in the consumer discretionary sector. The retailer declined over 19 percent and cost the Fund 42 basis points of performance. Shares traded down sharply in May after they reported weak sales growth which was below expectations although comps were unrealistically high. The company’s ongoing restructuring efforts are beginning to bear fruit but the process is nascent. We remain optimistic of continued improvement.

Those interested in out-of-favor stocks can’t look much further than retail. In a market routinely hitting all-time highs, the consumer discretionary sector’s 1.42% one-year return makes it the worst performing, second only to health care. Department Stores Won’t Go Away Easily, but They Are Becoming Unpopular The culture of online shopping has changed the clothing and apparel industry

In the past, if you set up a store in New York, it would have been next to impossible to sell to a customer in California. As such, only the National players had the opportunity to address the whole of the U.S. market in whatever category they operated in. Read more...
Under Armour’s Growth Is Still Intact Despite rich valuation, Under Armour can continue moving higher.
Despite its steep valuation, Under Armour (NYSE:UA) has managed to move higher this year due to its strong growth.
