Business Description

LDK Solar Co., Ltd was incorporated in the Cayman Islands on May 1, 2006. In June 2007, the Company completed the IPO. The Company is a manufacturer of multicrystalline solar wafers. Solar wafers are the main raw material used to produce solar cells, which are devices capable of converting sunlight into electricity. LDK Solar sells multicrystalline wafers globally to manufacturers of photovoltaic products, including solar cells and solar modules. In addition, it also provides wafer processing services to both monocrystalline and multicrystalline solar cell and module manufacturers, who provide it with the own silicon materials, such as polysilicon feedstock and ingots. LDK Solar processes such feedstock to produce ingots. The Company then slices such ingots and ingots provided by its customers into wafers to be delivered back to its customers. The Company manufactures multicrystalline ingots from polysilicon feedstock in its directional solidification system furnaces, or DSS furnaces, as an interim step in producing wafers. In addition to using solar-grade virgin polysilicon, The Company also use other polysilicon materials in the ingot manufacturing process. LDK Solar has developed proprietary production processes for the use of polysilicon scraps and recyclable polysilicon in manufacturing its ingots while maintaining its product quality and performance. The Company uses all of its ingots for production of is own wafers. In addition, the Company also sells polysilicon materials, which include ingots and polysilicon scraps. The Company's customers have included Gintech Energy Corporation, or Gintech, Q-Cells, Solarfun Power Holdings Co., Ltd., or Solarfun, Solland Solar Energy B.V., or Solland Solar, and Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd., or Suntech. The Company's customers currently comprise some of the industry leaders in the photovoltaic cell and module sector, both within and outside China. It charges a fee based on the number of wafers processed and the type of materials it received. The Company's equipment suppliers include Chemical Design Inc., or CDI, GT Solar Incorporated, or GT Solar, HCT Shaping Systems SA, an affiliate of Applied Materials, Inc., or HCT Shaping, Meyer Burger AG, or Meyer Burger, and Sinocon Machinery Company. LDK Solar also competes with players in China such as Glory Silicon, Jinggong P-D, Renesola, Shunda, SUMCO and Tianwei Yingli. Recently, many solar cell producers and polysilicon suppliers are also increasingly expanding into wafer production. These competitors include MEMC, Motech, NorSun, Q-Cells and Wacker Schott Solar. The Company is subject to a number of governmental regulations related to the storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials.
