Business Description

Laclede Group, Inc. was established in the year 1857 and incorporated in the state of Missouri. It is a public utility holding Company. The company is committed towards providing natural gas services through its regulated core utility operations, while engaging in non-regulated activities that provide sustainable growth. All of its subsidiaries are wholly owned. The company operates through two key business segments: Regulated Gas Distribution & Non-Regulated Gas Marketing. The Regulated Gas Distribution segment includes Laclede Gas Company, its largest subsidiary and core business unit. Laclede Gas is a public utility engaged in the retail distribution and sale of natural gas. Laclede Gas is the largest natural gas distribution utility in Missouri, serving approximately 628,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in the City of St. Louis and parts of ten counties in eastern Missouri. The Non-Regulated Gas Marketing segment includes Laclede Energy Resources, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary engaged in the marketing of natural gas and related activities on a non-regulated basis. LER markets natural gas to both on-system Utility transportation customers and customers outside of Laclede Gas'. The company focuses its gas supply portfolio around a number of large natural gas suppliers with equity ownership or control of assets strategically situated to complement Laclede's regionally diverse firm transportation arrangements. Laclede Gas utilizes both Mid-Continent and Gulf Coast gas sources to provide a level of supply diversity that facilitates the optimization of pricing differentials as well as protecting against the potential of regional supply disruptions. Laclede Gas purchased natural gas from 28 different suppliers to meet current gas sales and storage injection requirements. The main competition is the local electric company and suppliers of fuel oil, coal, propane in outlying areas. The business of Laclede Gas has monopoly characteristics being the lone distributor of natural gas within its franchised service area. Laclede Pipeline also provides transportation services to third parties. The company is subject to various environmental laws and regulations. Laclede Group is also engaged in other activities such as real estate development, compression of natural gas, and financial investments in other enterprises.
