GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Life Partners Holdings, Inc., a Texas corporation was incorporated in 1991. It is a specialty financial services company and the parent company of Life Partners, Inc. (LPI). LPI is involved in the secondary market for life insurance known generally as 'life settlements'. LPI facilitates the sale of life settlements between sellers and purchasers, but does not take possession or control of the policies. The purchasers acquire the life insurance policies at a discount to their face value for investment purposes. The Company provides purchasing services for life settlements to its client base. It facilitates these transactions by identifying, examining, and purchasing the policies as an agent for the purchasers. To meet market demand and maximize its value to its clients, it has made significant investments in proprietary software and processes that enable it to facilitate a higher volume of transactions while maintaining its quality controls. Since its inception, it has facilitated over 148,000 purchaser transactions involving over 6,500 policies. It acts as a purchasing agent for life settlement purchasers. In performing these services, it identifies, qualifies and purchases policies on behalf of its clients that match their buying parameters and return expectations. The Company categorizes its purchasers of life settlements as either institutional or retail. Institutional purchasers are typically investment funds designed to acquire and hold life settlements.
