GuruFocus Financial Strength Rank measures how strong a company’s financial situation is. It is based on these factors

1. The debt burden that the company has as measured by its Interest coverage (current year).
2. Debt to revenue ratio. The lower, the better
3. Altman Z-score.

A company ranks high with financial strength is likely to withstand any business slowdowns and recessions.

GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Lam Research Corporation was incorporated in 1980 in Delaware. The Company is a supplier of wafer fabrication equipment and services to the semiconductor industry. The Company designs, manufactures, markets, refurbishes, and services semiconductor processing equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. Its products are designed to help its customers build the smaller, faster, and more power-efficient devices that are used in a variety of electronic products, including cell phones, computers, storage devices, and networking equipment. The Company offers a broad portfolio of complementary products that are used in several areas of the semiconductor manufacturing process flow, including plasma etch, thin film deposition, photoresist strip, and wafer cleaning. Its products are used in front-end wafer processing, which involves the steps that create the active components of a device (transistor, capacitor) and its wiring (interconnect). The Company's marketing and sales efforts focus on building long-term relationships with its customers. These efforts are supported by a team of product marketing and sales professionals as well as equipment and process engineers that work closely with individual customers to develop solutions to its processing needs. The Company maintains ongoing support relationships with its customers and has a network of field service personnel in place throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea and Asia Pacific. The Company's manufacturing operations consist mainly of assembling and testing components, sub-assemblies, and modules that are then integrated into finished systems prior to shipment to its customers. The Company's policy is to seek patents on inventions relating to new or enhanced products and processes developed as part of its ongoing research, engineering, manufacturing, and support activities. The Company currently holds a number of United States and foreign patents covering various aspects of its products and processes. The Company's customers include semiconductor manufacturers that make memory, microprocessors, and other logic integrated circuits for a wide range of consumer and industrial electronics. The Company's competitors in the single-wafer wet clean market are Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and Tokyo Electron, Ltd. In the tungsten CVD, PECVD, HDP-CVD, ECD and PVD markets, its main competitor is Applied Materials, Inc. In the PECVD market, it also competes against ASM International. Its main competitors in the surface preparation product arena are Mattson Technologies, Inc. and PSK, Inc.
