Business Description

Lam Research Corporation was incorporated in 1980 in Delaware. The Company designs, manufactures, markets, refurbishes, and services semiconductor processing equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits. Semiconductor wafers are subjected to a complex series of process steps that result in the simultaneous creation of many individual integrated circuits. The Company's products selectively remove portions of various films from the wafer to create semiconductors. The market for semiconductor capital equipment is characterized by rapid technological change and product innovation. The Company's marketing and sales efforts are focused on building long-term relationships with its customers. These efforts are supported by a team of product marketing and sales professionals as well as equipment and process engineers that work closely with individual customers to develop solutions to its processing needs. The Company maintains ongoing support relationships with its customers and has a network of field service personnel in place throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea and Asia Pacific. The Company's manufacturing operations consist mainly of assembling and testing components, sub-assemblies, and modules that are then integrated into finished systems prior to shipment to its customers. The Company's policy is to seek patents on inventions relating to new or enhanced products and processes developed as part of its ongoing research, engineering, manufacturing, and support activities. The Company currently holds a number of United States and foreign patents covering various aspects of its products and processes. The Company's main competitors in the single-wafer wet clean market are Dainippon Screen Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and Tokyo Electron, Ltd. In the tungsten CVD, PECVD, HDP-CVD, ECD and PVD markets, its main competitor is Applied Materials, Inc. In the PECVD market, it also competes against ASM International. Its main competitors in the surface preparation product arena are Mattson Technologies, Inc. and PSK, Inc.
