The Company along with its subsidiaries is engaged in design, manufacture and market material-based solutions for acoustical and coated applications. The Company currently report under one segment based on how it view its business for evaluating performance and making operating decisions. It operates three manufacturing plants in the United States and Europe: one facility in Elk Grove Village, Illinois; one facility in Walbridge, Ohio; and one facility in Eisenach, Germany. It also operates two research and development facilities: one in Canton, Michigan and one co-located with its manufacturing facility in Eisenach, Germany. It is a supplier of engineered material-based solutions and applies its expertise to solve design challenges for many automotive and appliance manufacturers. The acoustical material-based solutions include multilayer composites consisting of metals, polymers and other materials used to manage noise and vibration. The coated metal material-based solutions include coil coated and EG protective and decorative coatings applied to coils of metal in a continuous, high-speed, roll-to-roll process. Its material-based solutions are designed to meet specific customer requirements for the automotive, appliance, building and construction, lighting, and electronics markets. The Company uses a significant level of shared assets and personnel across each of its product categories. It is common for a single customer to purchase products from several different product categories. The products are differentiated by the type of material bonded to the steel and the bonding method employed. Various paints and coatings are applied by running the uncoiled steel ribbon through a paint bath and baking it onto the steel in high temperature ovens. Its proprietary Quiet Steel is produced by bonding two metal coils together with highly engineered viscoelastic core materials. Zinc and zinc-nickel corrosion protections are applied by running the steel through metal electrolyte baths and galvanizing the material to the metal with electricity. This galvanization process is only performed at its Walbridge facility. The markets for the Company's material-based solutions, both acoustical and coated, are competitive at both domestically and internationally.
