Business Description

M.D.C. Holdings, Inc. a Delaware Corporation originally incorporated in Colorado in 1972. The Company operates in the field of homebuilding and financial services. Its homebuilding operations consist of wholly-owned subsidiary companies that generally purchase finished lots for the construction and sale of single-family detached homes to first-time and first-time move-up homebuyers under the name 'Richmond American Homes.' The homebuilding operations are comprised of many homebuilding subdivisions that it considers to be its operating segments. The Financial Services and other segment consists of HomeAmerican Mortgage Corporation, which originates mortgage loans mainly for its homebuyers, American Home Insurance Agency, Inc., which offers third-party insurance products to its homebuyers, and American Home Title and Escrow Company, which provides title agency services to the Company and its homebuyers in Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, Virginia and West Virginia. The Company builds and sells mainly single-family detached homes that are designed and built to meet local customer preferences. The Company is a general contractor for all of its projects and retains subcontractors for land development and home construction. The financial services of the Company include subsidiary businesses which mainly provide mortgage financing, title insurance and homeowner insurance for its homebuyers. In its homebuilding segments, its main functions include land acquisition and development, home construction purchasing, sales and marketing, and customer service. Generally, it builds single-family detached homes in a number of standardized series, designed to provide variety in the size and style of homes for its potential homebuyers. Within each series, it builds several different floor plans offering standard and optional features. HomeAmerican is a full-service mortgage lender and the principal originator of mortgage loans for its homebuyers. To communicate its Richmond American Homes brand and sales promotions, it has a centralized in-house advertising and marketing department that controls and monitors the communication of the Company's brand and promotion efforts. The Company's business is subject to numerous federal, local and state laws and regulations concerning land development, construction of homes, sales, mortgage lending, environmental and other aspects of its business.
