MDU Resources Group Inc was incorporated under the laws of the state of Delaware in 1924. The company operates as a diversified natural resource company in the United States. The company generates, transmits, and distributes electricity, as well as distributes natural gas. As of December 31, 2012, it provided retail electric services to approximately 131,000 residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers in 177 communities and adjacent rural areas; and sold retail natural gas to approximately 859,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in 334 communities and adjacent rural areas, as well as offered natural gas transportation services. The company is also involved in the construction and maintenance of electric and communication lines, gas pipelines, fire suppression systems, and external lighting and traffic signalization equipment; provides utility excavation services, and inside electrical wiring, cabling, and mechanical services; sells and distributes electrical materials; and manufactures and distributes specialty equipment for utilities and large manufacturing, commercial, industrial, institutional, and government customers. In addition, it owns and operates approximately 3,800 miles of transmission, gathering, and storage lines, as well as owns, leases, and operates 33 compressor stations in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Further, the company engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and production of natural gas and oil resources in Rocky Mountain and Mid-Continent/Gulf States. Additionally, it mines, processes, and sells construction aggregates, including crushed stone, sand, and gravel; produces and sells asphalt mix, and supplies liquid asphalt for commercial and roadway applications; and provides ready-mixed concrete, cement, finished concrete products, and other building materials for use in various types of construction, as well as offers related contracting services.
