MFA Financial, Inc. was incorporated in Maryland on July 24, 1997, and began operations on April 10, 1998. Its principal objective is to generate net income for stockholders resulting from the difference between the interest and other income earned from investments and the interest expense paid on leveraged investments and operating costs. The Company primarily invests in residential MBS that are issued or guaranteed by a federally chartered corporation or agency of the U.S. government such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac etc. and residential MBS that are not guaranteed by any U.S. government agency or any federally-chartered corporation. The MBS are primarily secured by pools of hybrid, adjustable-rate mortgage loans and 15-year fixed-rate mortgages.
