Business Description

MGE Energy, Inc. was organized as a Wisconsin corporation in 2001. MGE was organized as a Wisconsin corporation in 1896. The Company has several business segments which include regulated electric utility operations; regulated gas utility operations; non regulated energy operations; Transmission investments; and all other. Regulated electric utility operations segment is engaged in generating, purchasing, and distributing electricity through MGE. Regulated gas utility operations segment is engaged in purchasing and distributing natural gas through MGE. Non regulated energy operations segment is engaged in constructing, owning, and leasing electric generating capacity that assists MGE through MGE Energy's wholly owned subsidiaries MGE Power Elm Road and MGE Power West Campus. Transmission investments segment is engaged in representing its investment in American Transmission Company LLC, a company engaged in the business of providing electric transmission services primarily in Wisconsin. All other segment is engaged in investing in companies and property that relate to the regulated operations and financing the regulated operations, through its wholly owned subsidiaries MAGAEL and CWDC, and Corporate functions. MGE distributes electricity in a service area covering a 316 square-mile area of Dane County, Wisconsin. The service area includes the city of Madison, Wisconsin. It owns or leases ownership interests in electric generation facilities located in Wisconsin and Iowa. MGE is subject to frequently changing local, state, and federal regulations concerning air quality, water quality, land use, threatened and endangered species, hazardous materials handling, and solid waste disposal.
