MKS Instruments, Inc. was founded in 1961 incorporated in the state of Massachusetts. The Company is a provider of instruments, subsystems and process control solutions that measure, control, power, monitor and analyze critical parameters to improve process performance and productivity of advanced manufacturing processes. It also provides services relating to the maintenance and repair of its products, software maintenance, installation services and training. The company groups its products into four product groups: Instruments and Control Products, Power and Reactive Gas Products, Vacuum Products and Analytical Solutions Group Products. Its primary served markets are manufacturers of capital equipment for semiconductor devices and for other thin film applications including flat panel displays, solar cells, data storage media and other advanced coatings. It also leverages its technology in other markets with advanced manufacturing applications including medical equipment, pharmaceutical manufacturing and energy generation and environmental monitoring. The company's products are used in other energy generation and environmental monitoring processes such as nuclear fuel processing, fuel cell research, greenhouse gas monitoring, and chemical agent detection; medical instrument sterilization; consumable medical supply manufacturing and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Its power delivery products are also incorporated into other end-market products such as medical imaging equipment. In addition, the company's products are sold to government, university and industrial laboratories for vacuum applications involving research and development in materials science, physical chemistry and electronics materials. Major equipment and process providers and research laboratories are concentrated in Europe, Japan and the United States. The company has a diverse base of customers that includes manufacturers of semiconductor capital equipment and semiconductor devices, thin film capital equipment used in the manufacture of flat panel displays, solar cells, data storage media and other coating applications; and other industrial, medical and manufacturing companies, and university, government and industrial research laboratories. Its customers include Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron. The market for its products is competitive. As of December 31, 2012, the Company owns 370 U.S. patents, 440 foreign patents and had 116 pending U.S. patent applications that expire at various dates through 2031.
