McMoran Exploration Co. is engaged in the exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and onshore in the Gulf Coast region, with a focus on the potentially hydrocarbons contained in large, deep geologic structures often located beneath shallow reservoirs where reserves have been produced, commonly known as deep gas. The Company is also pursuing plans for the development of the Main Pass Energy Hub project located at its former sulphur facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. The Company has two wholly owned subsidiaries through which the Company primarily conduct its business, McMoRan Oil & Gas LLC, MOXY, which conducts all its oil and gas operations, and Freeport-McMoRan Energy LLC, Freeport Energy, which is pursuing the development of the MPEH project and owns 100 percent of the oil operations at Main Pass. McMoran's business strategy is to pursue exploration and development opportunities in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico and onshore in the Gulf Coast region, primarily high-risk, high-potential, deep-gas exploration prospects and to develop the MPEH. McMoran's business strategy provides potential opportunities for the company to benefit from a positive U.S. natural gas market through an aggressive exploration drilling program in the Gulf of Mexico and Gulf Coast region and the establishment of an LNG receiving, processing, distribution and storage facility at Main Pass. The Company and its predecessors has engaged in oil and natural gas exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Coast region for over 30 years. Since inception of the exploration venture, the Company and its exploration partner have participated in eight discoveries and a potential ninth discovery at Blueberry Hill. McMoran currently sells its natural gas in the spot market at prevailing prices. Prices on the spot market fluctuate with demand and for other reasons. The Company generally sells its crude oil and condensate one month at a time at prevailing market prices. The Company and a private exploration and production Company have a joint commitment to spend at least $500 million to pursue exploration prospects primarily in Deep Miocene formations on the shelf of the Gulf of Mexico and onshore in the Gulf Coast area. The Company's exploration team has undertaken an intensive process to evaluate its acreage position from a technical standpoint.
