Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) is one of the largest independent refiners and marketers of crude oil and refined products in the U.S. The shares performed strongly during the fourth quarter as investors anticipated rising profitability due to signals that refining margins were expanding on widening price differentials between domestic and international oil prices. Shares also appeared to benefit from increased visibility into Marathon's pipeline of midstream assets that can be dropped down into its Master Limited Partnership in the future.

Marathon Petroleum Corp is incorporated in Delaware on November 9, 2009. The Company is a marketer, transporter and transporter of petroleum product refiners in the United States. The Company operates currently owns and operates seven refineries, all located in the United States, with an aggregate crude oil refining capacity of approximately 1.7 mmbpcd. The Companies refineries supply refined products to resellers and consumers within its market areas, including the Midwest, Gulf Coast and Southeast regions of the United States. It distributes refined products to its customers through private domestic fleets of inland petroleum product barges, terminal operations in the United States, and a combination of MPC-owned and third-party-owned trucking and rail assets. As of December 31, 2013, it had ownership interests in approximately 8,300 miles of crude oil and refined product pipelines to deliver crude oil to its refineries and other locations and refined products to wholesale and retail market areas. It operates in three segments namely Refining & Marketing, Speedway and Pipeline Transportation. The Refining & Marketing refines crude oil and other feedstocks at its seven refineries in the Gulf Coast and Midwest regions of the United States, purchases ethanol and refined products for resale and distributes refined products through various means, including barges, terminals and trucks that it owns or operates. The Company sells refined products to wholesale marketing customers domestically and internationally, buyers on the spot market, Speedway(r) business segment and to independent entrepreneurs who operate Marathon(r) retail outlets. The Speedway segment sells transportation fuels and convenience products in the retail market in the Midwest, through Speedway convenience stores and Pipeline Transportation segment transports crude oil and other feedstocks to its refineries and other locations, delivers refined products to wholesale and retail market areas and includes the aggregated operations of MPLX LP and MPC's retained pipeline assets and investments.
