Mechel OAO is engaged in mining, steel, ferroalloys and power sectors. The Company's steel business comprises the production and sale of semi-finished steel products in Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Kazakhstan, the USA and Europe. It also produces coke.

Mechel OAO was incorporated on March 19, 2003, under the laws of the Russian Federation. It is a vertically integrated mining, steel, ferroalloys and power group. The Company is a vertically integrated group. The Company operates into four industrial segments: mining, steel, ferroalloys and power. The Company has freight seaports in Russia on the Sea of Japan (Port Posiet) and on the Sea of Azov (Port Temryuk) and a freight river port on the Kama River, a tributary of the Volga River in central Russia (Port Kambarka). It has a fleet of freight railcars, locomotives and long-haul trucks. The mining segment produces metallurgical and steam coal, as well as iron ore, coke and limestone. The segment consists of coal, iron ore and coke production facilities in Russia and the United States. It also includes limestone operations and certain transportation and logistics facilities and engineering operations. The steel segment produces and sells semi-finished steel products, long products of wide range of steel grades, carbon and stainless flat steel products and high value-added metal products, including wire products, stampings and forgings. The steel production facilities in Russia include one integrated steel mill, one steel-making mill, a wire products plant and forgings and stampings mills in the southern Ural Mountains, a wire products plant in northwestern Russia near the border with Finland. It also has a wire products plant in Lithuania. The Feerroalloys segment produces and sells ferrosilicon from its Bratsk Ferroalloy Plant. It also has the subsoil license for the Shevchenko silicate nickel ore deposit in Kazakhstan. The Power segment sells electricity to the wholesale market, as well as supplies electricity within its group.
