GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on MTS Systems Corp

John Rogers Comments on MTS Systems Corp. - Nov 05, 2013

During the quarter, we initiated one position and exited two positions in Ariel Fund. We added MTS Systems Corp. (NASDAQ:MTSC), which specializes in physical testing equipment. It occupies a key, important niche for manufacturing firms that are doing more and more virtual testing. In our view, companies are unlikely to abandon real-world physical tests; that stance is a contrarian one in a world where many believe virtual testing will eventually completely take over. In addition to significant potential growth, it boasts good operating margins, a sturdy balance sheet, and remains a very trusted brand.

From John Rogers' Ariel Fund and Ariel Appreciate Fund portfolio manager letter third quarter 2013.

Traded in other countries:MT7.Germany,
MTS Systems Corp was incorporated under the Minnesota law in 1966. The Company is a supplier of test systems and position sensors. Its operations are organized and managed in two business segments, the Test segment and the Sensors segment. The Test segment (Test) provides testing solutions including hardware, software and service. Its testing solutions are used by customers in their development of new products to characterize the product's mechanical properties. Its solutions simulate forces and motions that these customers expect their products to encounter in use. Mechanical testing in a lab setting is an accepted method to accelerate product development compared to reliance on full physical prototypes in real-world settings, proving ground testing and virtual testing because it provides more controlled simulation and accurate measurement. The need for mechanical simulation increases in proportion to the cost of a product, the range and complexity of the physical environment in which the product will be used, expected warranty or recall risk and expense, governmental regulation and potential legal liability. Because a significant portion of the products in Test are considered by its customers to be capital expenditures, the timing of purchases may be impacted by interest rates, customer capital spending, and product development cycles. A typical test system includes a reaction frame to hold the prototype specimen, a hydraulic pump or electro-mechanical power source, piston actuators to create the force or motion, and a computer controller with specialized software to coordinate the actuator movement and record and manipulate results. Lower force and less dynamic testing can usually be accomplished with electro-mechanical power sources, which are generally less expensive than hydraulic systems. Higher force and more dynamic testing typically require hydraulically powered systems, which are usually more expensive. In addition to these basic components, Test sells a variety of accessories and spare parts, as well as services, including installation, calibration, maintenance, training and consulting. The Sensors segment (Sensors) products are used by industrial machinery and mobile equipment manufacturers to automate the operation of their products for improved safety and end-user productivity. Examples of customer industries include manufacturers of plastic injection molding machines, steel mills, fluid power, oil and gas, medical, wood product processing equipment, mobile equipment, and energy. Its products are also used to measure fluid displacement, such as liquid levels for customers in the process industries. Sensors manufactures products utilizing magnetostriction technology. It has developed a technology, known as Temposonics. This technology offers high speed and precise non-contact position sensing and is ideal for use in harsh operating environments.
