Metro AG operates cash and carry stores, supermarkets and hypermarkets, consumer electronics stores, department stores, theme stores, and provides online sales services. It also markets products over the internet.

Metro is a diversified retailer with activities in Cash & Carry (50% of sales), hypermarkets (13%) and consumer electronics (37%). Since listing in 1996, it has restructured its portfolio to be more focused, exiting various businesses. Today it operates in 30 countries with over 2,000 stores and 220,000 employees. Consumer electronics (Ceconomy) will spin off from the Metro food businesses (Real hypermarkets and Cash & Carry) in mid-2017, assuming shareholder approval is obtained at the February annual general meeting.
