GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Nanometrics Inc along with its subsidiaries provides process control metrology and inspection systems used in the fabrication of integrated circuits, high-brightness LEDs, discrete components and data storage devices.

Nanometrics Inc was incorporated in California on 1975. The Company along with its subsidiaries provides process control metrology and inspection systems used in the fabrication of integrated circuits, LEDs, discrete components and data storage devices. Its automated and integrated systems address process control applications, including critical dimension and film thickness measurement, device topography, defect inspection, overlay registration, and analysis of other film properties such as optical, electrical and material characteristics. Its process control solutions are deployed throughout the fabrication process, from front-end-of-line substrate manufacturing, to production of semiconductors and other devices, to wafer-scale packaging applications. The Nanometrics products address the process control requirements of the semiconductor manufacturing industry. It includes Automated Standalone Systems, System Platform, and Integrated Systems. The Automated systems are made up of both semi-automated and fully automated metrology systems. The Atlas II, Atlas II+, Atlas XP/Atlas XP and Atlas-M are different metrology systems that provide optical critical dimension, or OCD, thin film metrology and wafer stress for transistor and interconnect metrology applications. In System Platform, Lynx platform enables cluster metrology factory automation for improved cost of ownership to customers by combining Atlas II and IMPULSE, UniFire metrology and SPARK inspection systems. The Integrated metrology systems are installed directly onto wafer processing equipment to provide near real-time measurements for improved process control and maximum throughput. The IM systems are sold directly to end customers and through OEM channels. The Company's Material Characterization products include systems that are used to monitor the physical, optical, electrical and material characteristics of discrete electronic industry, HB-LED, solar PV, compound semiconductor, strained silicon and silicon-on-insulator devices, including composition, crystal structure, layer thickness, dopant concentration, contamination and electron mobility. The Company sells its metrology and inspection systems to several semiconductor manufacturers and equipment suppliers, producers of HB-LEDs, solar PVs, data storage devices, silicon wafers and photomasks. The Company offers local direct sales, service and application support through the offices located in United States, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore, United Kingdom, France and Italy, and works with dealers and sales representatives in Asia and in other countries. In automated metrology, the Company competes with KLA-Tencor Corporation and Nova Measuring Instruments Ltd. for thin film, overlay, and critical dimension metrology. Its competitor in integrated metrology is Nova. Further, the Company competes with a number of companies in HB-LED and solar PV markets.
