National Grid PLC was incorporated on 11 July 2000. The Company is engaged in the transmission and distribution of electricity and gas in Great Britain and northeastern US. Its segment includes UK Transmission, UK Gas Distribution, and US Regulated. In UK Transmission segment, the Company owns the electricity transmission system in England and Wales. Its networks comprise approximately 4,470 miles of overhead line, 870 miles of underground cable and 329 substations. It is also the national electricity transmission system operator, responsible for both the England and Wales transmission system, and the two high voltage transmission networks in Scotland, which it does not own. Day-to-day operation of the system involves the continuous real-time matching of demand and generation output. The segment is also designated as system operator for the new offshore electricity transmission regime. This segment owns and operates the gas national transmission system in Great Britain, with day-to-day responsibility for balancing demand. Its network comprises approximately 4,760 miles of high pressure pipe and 23 compressor stations. In the UK Gas Distribution, the Company owns and operates four of the eight regional gas distribution networks in Great Britain. Its networks comprise approximately 82,000 miles of gas distribution pipeline and it transports gas from the gas national transmission system to around 10.9 million consumers on behalf of 26 gas shippers. In the US Regulated, the Company owns and operates electricity distribution networks in upstate New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Through these networks the Company serves approximately 3.4 million electricity consumers in New England and upstate New York. It also owns and operates 50 electricity generation units on Long Island that together provide 3.8 GW of power under contract to LIPA. Its US gas distribution networks provide services to around3. 5 million consumers across the northeastern US, located in the service territories in upstate New York, New York City, Long Island, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It also owns and operates an electricity transmission system of approximately 8,700 miles spanning upstate New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont operating nearly 100 miles of underground cable and 522 substations. The segment also maintains and operates the electricity transmission and distribution system on Long Island owned by LIPA, covering 3,185 square kilometres. The Company has operations in the United Kingdom and USA.
