NL Industries, Inc., is a New Jersey Corporation incorporated in 1891. The Company is a holding company. It operates in the component products industry through its majority-owned subsidiary, CompX International Inc. It operates in the chemicals industry through its non-controlling interest in Kronos Worldwide, Inc. CompX and Kronos each file periodic reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission. CompX is a manufacturer of engineered components utilized in a variety of applications and industries. Through its Security Products division CompX manufactures mechanical and electrical cabinet locks and other locking mechanisms used in postal, office and institutional furniture, transportation, vending, tool storage and other general cabinetry applications. CompX's Furniture Components division manufactures precision ball bearing slides and ergonomic computer support systems used in office and institutional furniture, home appliances, tool storage, healthcare and a variety of other applications. CompX also manufactures stainless steel exhaust systems, gauges and throttle controls for the performance boat industry through its Marine Components division. Kronos is a global producer and marketer of value-added titanium dioxide pigments, which are used for imparting whiteness, brightness, opacity and durability to a diverse range of customer applications and end-use markets, including coatings, plastics, paper and other industrial and consumer "quality-of-life" products. Kronos has production facilities in Europe and North America. Kronos' main competitors include E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., or Dupont; Millennium Inorganic Chemicals, Inc., or Cristal; Huntsman Corporation; Tronox Incorporated; and Sachtleben Chemie GmbH. CompX's operations are subject to federal, state, local and non-U.S. laws and regulations relating to the use, storage, handling, generation, transportation, treatment, emission, discharge, disposal, remediation of and exposure to hazardous and non-hazardous substances, materials and wastes.
