Natural Resource Partners L.P., is a limited partnership formed in April 2002. The Company is engaged in the business of owning and managing coal properties in the United States. It owns coal reserves in the three major coal-producing regions namely Appalachia, the Illinois Basin and the Western United States. The Company's operations are conducted through, and its operating assets are owned by, its subsidiaries. The Company own preparation plants and related material handling facilities. In addition to its preparation plants, it owns handling and transportation infrastructure. It owns and manages aggregate reserves, but does not engage in the mining, processing or sale of aggregate related products. The Company owns an estimated 500 million tons of aggregate reserves located in a number of states across the country. The Company faces competition from other land companies, coal producers, as well as private equity firms in purchasing coal reserves and royalty producing properties. The Company's lessees are obligated to conduct mining operations in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
