Norfolk Southern Corp was incorporated in Virginia on July 23, 1980. The Company is engaged in the rail transportation of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods primarily in the Southeast, East, and Midwest and, via interchange with rail carriers, to and from the rest of the United States. It also transports overseas freight through several Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports. The Company provides logistics services and offer intermodal network in the eastern half of the United States. As at December 31, 2013, its railroads operated approximately 20,000 miles of road in 22 states and the District of Columbia. Its system reaches many individual industries, electric generating facilities, mines (in western Virginia, eastern Kentucky, southern and northern West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and southern Illinois and Indiana), distribution centers, transload facilities, and other businesses located in its service area. One of its subsidiaries, Triple Crown, provides bimodal truckload transportation service utilizing roadrailer trailers, a hybrid technology that facilitates both over-the-road and on-the-rail transportation utilizing enclosed trailers that are pulled over the highways in tractor-trailer configuration and over the rails by locomotives. In addition, Triple Crown utilizes conventional trailers that are also moved on rail flatcars. Triple Crown provides service in the eastern United States, as well as Ontario and Quebec, through a network of terminals located in 13 cities. In addition to environmental, safety, securities, and other regulations generally applicable to all business, the Company's railroads are subject to regulation by the Surface Transportation Board (STB). There is continuing strong competition among rail, water, and highway carriers. Its primary rail competitor is CSX Corporation; both railroads operate throughout much of the same territory.
