New York Community Bancorp Inc, formerly Queens County Bancorp, Inc, was established on April 14, 1859. The Company changed its name to New York Community Bancorp, Inc. on November 21, 2000. The Company is multi-bank holding company and has two main subsidiaries: New York Community Bank and New York Commercial Bank. New York Community Bank is a New York State-chartered savings bank with 242 branches that currently operate through seven local divisions. The Company is producer of multi-family loans in New York City, with an emphasis on non-luxury apartment buildings that feature below-market rents. In addition to multi-family loans, which is the principal asset, the Company originates commercial real estate loans and, to a much lesser extent, acquisition, development, and construction loans, and commercial and industrial loans. The Company also originates one-to-four family loans, through its mortgage banking operation. New York Commercial Bank is a New York State-chartered commercial bank with 30 branches in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Westchester County, and Long Island, including 18 that operate under the name Atlantic Bank. The multi-family loans its originate are typically secured by non-luxury apartment buildings in New York City that are subject to rent regulation and therefore feature below-market rents. The Company's typical loan has a term of ten or twelve years, with a fixed rate of interest in years one through five or seven and a rate that either adjusts annually or is fixed for the five years that follow. Acquisition, Development, and Construction Loans portfolio largely consists of loans that were originated for land acquisition, development, and construction of multi-family and residential tract projects in New York City and Long Island, and, to a lesser extent, for the construction of owner-occupied one-to-four family homes and commercial properties. Commercial and Industrial ('C&I') Loans are generally made to small and mid-size businesses for working capital (including inventory and receivables), business expansion, and the purchase of equipment and machinery. The Company has four main funding sources: the deposits it gathers through the branch network or add through acquisitions, and brokered deposits; wholesale borrowings, mainly in the form of Federal Home Loan Bank ('FHLB') advances and repurchase agreements with the FHLB and various brokerage firms; cash flows produced by the repayment and sale of loans; and cash flows produced by securities repayments and sales. The Company's current market for deposits consists of the 26 counties in the five states that are served by its branch network. The Company competes with commercial banks, savings banks, credit unions, and investment banks, for deposits, and with the same financial institutions and others (including mortgage brokers and insurance companies) for loans.
