GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on Oracle Corporation

Hotchkis & Wiley Comments on Oracle - Jul 22, 2014

Stock selection in technology was the largest performance detractor for the quarter. Oracle (ORCL) (2.7%)* lagged after reporting results slightly below consensus estimates, though our investment thesis remains fully intact.

Yacktman Funds Comment on Oracle - Mar 12, 2014

Oracle Corp. appreciated more than 10% after reporting solid earnings results. We first purchased shares in Oracle Corp. in late June of this year and quickly built a position that today is more than 3% of assets in each Fund. The Oracle Corp. investment demonstrates that new value opportunities can still be found even during a period of significant market appreciation.

Bill Nygren Comments on Oracle - Oct 08, 2013

n the quarter we have owned Oracle (ORCL), it has had more difficulty keeping up with Wall Street’s expectations than with ours. We continue to view the shares—selling at approximately 10x free cash flow—as significantly undervalued. Meanwhile, management is doing the right thing by aggressively repurchasing shares at what we believe to be a terrific price.

Donald Yacktman Comments on Oracle Corp - Sep 09, 2013

As mentioned earlier, at the end of the quarter we acquired a position in Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL). Over the last few years we have purchased many positions in established technology companies where the growth rates have slowed but we believe there is significant free cash flow and the valuation is very attractive. We have referred to these investments as “old tech.” These stocks seem to lack a natural home buyer as they pass from growth managers who often pay high multiples for what they perceive to be long-term growth to value managers who dislike the rate of change that can occur in the technology industry due to innovation and competition.
