Sterling Bancorp formerly known as Provident New York Bancorp is a Delaware corporation. On October 31, 2013, Provident New York Bancorp completed its acquisition of Sterling Bancorp. It is a unitary savings and loan holding company. It owns all of the outstanding shares of common stock of Sterling National Bank. It is a full-service bank which offers a complete line of commercial, business banking, wealth management and consumer banking products and services. Its main business is accepting deposits and together with funds generated from operations and borrowings, investing in various types of loans and securities. The Company operates approximately 35 financial centers which serve the greater New York metropolitan area. It operates commercial real estate loans, multifamily real estate and commercial business loans. It also originates residential mortgage loans on a fixed-rate and adjustable-rate basis collateralized by residential real estate and consumer loans such as home equity lines of credit, homeowner loans and personal loans. Deposits, borrowings, repayments and prepayments of loans and securities, proceeds from sales of loans and securities, the proceeds from maturing securities and cash flows from operations are the primary sources of the Company's funds for use in lending, investing and for other general corporate purposes. The Company offers a variety of deposit accounts with a range of interest rates and terms. Its deposit accounts consist of savings accounts, NOW accounts, checking accounts, money market accounts, club accounts, certificates of deposit and IRAs and other qualified plan accounts. It provides a variety of commercial checking accounts and other products for businesses. The competition for loans comes from commercial banks, savings banks, mortgage banking companies, credit unions, insurance companies and other financial service companies. The Company faces additional competition for deposits from non-depository competitors such as the mutual fund industry, securities and brokerage firms and insurance companies. It is supervised and regulated by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
