Penford Corp is a Washington corporation originally incorporated in September 1983. The Company is a developer, manufacturer and marketer of specialty natural-based ingredient systems for industrial and food ingredient applications, including fuel grade ethanol. Its strategically-located manufacturing facilities in the United States provide it with geographic coverage of its target markets. It operates in two business segments namely Industrial Ingredients and Food Ingredients. The Industrial Ingredients - North America and Food Ingredients - North America segments are categories of end-market users. The Company has research and development capabilities, which are used in understanding the complex chemistry of carbohydrate-based materials and in developing applications to address customer needs. Specialty products for industrial applications are designed to improve the strength and performance of customers' products and efficiencies in the manufacture of coated and uncoated paper and paper packaging products. Food Ingredients - North America is a developer and manufacturer of specialty starches and dextrins to the food manufacturing and food service industries. Its raw materials include Corn, potato starch, chemicals and natural gas. Specialty starch ingredient brand names for industrial applications include, among others, Penford(R) gums, Pensize(R) binders, Penflex(R) sizing agent, Topcat(R) cationic additive and the Apollo(R) starch series. Product brand names for food ingredient applications include PenBind(R), PenCling(R) and PenPlus(R). The Company competes directly with approximately five other companies that manufacture specialty starches for the papermaking industry, approximately six other companies that manufacture specialty food ingredients, and numerous producers of fuel ethanol. Since the Company's customers are generally other manufacturers and processors, of the Company's products are distributed via rail or truck to customer facilities. The Company is subject to many federal, state and local environmental and health and safety laws and regulations, particularly with respect to the use, handling, treatment, storage, discharge and disposal of substances and hazardous wastes used or generated in its manufacturing processes.
