GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Radian Group Inc was incorporated as a business corporation under the laws of the State of Delaware in 1991. The Company is a credit enhancement company. The Company has two business segments; mortgage insurance and financial guaranty. Its mortgage insurance segment provides credit-related insurance coverage, mainly through private mortgage insurance and risk management services, to mortgage lending institutions. The Company conducts its business mainly through Radian Guaranty Inc., its main mortgage insurance subsidiary. The Companys financial guaranty segment has provided direct insurance and reinsurance on credit-based risks, and also offered credit protection on various asset classes through financial guaranty policies and credit default swaps. While the Company has discontinued writing new financial guaranty business in 2008, it continues to provide financial guaranty insurance on its existing portfolio consisting mainly of public finance and structured finance insured transactions. In addition, its main financial guaranty subsidiary, Radian Asset Assurance Inc., is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Radian Guaranty, which allows its financial guaranty business to serve as a source of capital support for its mortgage insurance business. Its competitors include Arch U.S. MI, Essent Guaranty Inc., Genworth Financial Inc., Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation, NMI Holdings, Inc. and United Guaranty Corporation. The Company and its insurance subsidiaries are subject to comprehensive regulation mainly designed for the protection of policyholders, rather than for the benefit of investors, by the insurance departments in the various states where its insurance subsidiaries are licensed to transact business.
