RLI Corporation is an Illinois corporation that was organized in 1965. The company underwrites selected property and casualty insurance through major subsidiaries collectively known as RLI Insurance Group. It conducts its operations through four insurance companies. RLI Insurance Company, writes multiple lines insurance on an admitted basis in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Contractors Bonding and Insurance Company is a subsidiary of RLI Insurance Company, has authority to write multiple lines of insurance on an admitted basis in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Mt. Hawley Insurance Company (Mt. Hawley), a subsidiary of RLI Insurance Company, writes surplus lines insurance in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. RLI Indemnity Company (RIC), a subsidiary of Mt. Hawley, has authority to write multiple lines of insurance on an admitted basis in 48 states and the District of Columbia. The segments of its insurance operations are casualty, property and surety. The casualty portion of business consists General Liability, Commercial and Personal Umbrella Liability , Commercial Transportation ,CBIC Package Business, Executive Products. Professional Services The surety segment offers Miscellaneous Surety, Contract Surety, Commercial Surety, Oil and Gas Surety The property Segment offers Commercial property coverage, marine coverage, crop reinsurance, property reinsurance and variety of other smaller programs in the property segment, including a limited amount of homeowners and dwelling fire insurance in Hawaii. The company's competitors in casualty segment are, among others, Ace, Arch, James River, Meadowbrook, Navigators, USLI, Great West, Lancer, Baldwin & Lyons, Chubb, Philadelphia, Great American, Travelers and CNA. The company is subject to extensive governmental regulation and supervision. Its insurance regulations are designed to protect the interests of policyholders rather than shareholders and other investors.
