Rhino Resource Partners LP is a Delaware corporation, engaged in producing, processing and selling high quality coal of various steam and metallurgical grades from multiple coal producing basins in the United States. The Company markets its steam coal mainly to electric utility companies as fuel for their steam powered generators. Customers for its metallurgical coal are mainly steel and coke producers who use coal to produce coke, which is used as a raw material in the steel manufacturing process. In addition to operating coal properties, the Company manages and leases coal properties and collects royalties from such management and leasing activities. Its diversified energy portfolio also includes investments in oil and natural gas mineral rights in the Utica Shale and Cana Woodford regions. In addition, the Company expanded its business to include infrastructure support services, including the formation of a service company to provide drill pad construction for operators in the Utica Shale as well as other joint venture investments to provide for the transportation of hydrocarbons and drilling support services in the Utica Shale region. It has a geographically diverse asset base with coal reserves located in Central Appalachia, Northern Appalachia, the Illinois Basin and the Western Bituminous region and oil and natural gas investments in the Utica Shale region of eastern Ohio and the Cana Woodford region of western Oklahoma. The Company operated approximately nine mines, including four underground and five surface mines, located in Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia and Utah. The Company's competitors include Alliance Resource Partners LP, Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., Arch Coal, Inc., Booth Energy Group, CONSOL Energy Inc., James River Coal Company, Murray Energy Corporation, Foresight Energy LLC, Oxford Resource Partners, LP, Patriot and TECO Energy, Inc. The Company is subject to regulation by federal, state and local authorities.
