Retail Properties of America Inc was initially formed on March 5, 2003 as Inland Western Retail Real Estate Trust, Inc. On March 8, 2012, the Company changed its name to Retail Properties of America, Inc. The Company is a real estate investment trust (REIT) which owns and operates high quality, strategically located shopping centers in the United States. The Company owns 228 retail operating properties representing 31,597,000 square feet of gross leasable area. Its retail operating portfolio includes power centers, neighborhood and community centers and lifestyle centers, as well as single-user retail properties. The Company competes with other real estate investors, including other REITs, pension funds, insurance companies, foreign investors, real estate partnerships, private individuals and other real estate companies. The properties in its portfolio are subject to various laws, ordinances and regulations, including regulations relating to common areas.
