GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

EchoStar Corp was organized in October 2007 as a corporation under the laws of the State of Nevada. The Company operates in three segments: EchoStar Technologies, EchoStar Satellite Services, and Hughes. EchoStar Technologies designs, develops and distributes digital set-top boxes and related products and technology, including its Slingbox "placeshifting" technology, primarily for satellite TV service providers, telecommunication and cable companies and, with respect to Slingboxes, directly to consumers via retail outlets. EchoStar Technologies also provides digital broadcast operations including satellite uplinking/downlinking, transmission services, signal processing, conditional access management and other services primarily to DISH Network. EchoStar Satellite Services uses 10 of its 11 owned and leased in-orbit satellites and related FCC licenses to lease capacity on a full-time and occasional-use basis primarily to DISH Network, and secondarily to Dish Mexico, S. de R.L. de C.V. ("Dish Mexico"), U.S. government service providers, state agencies, Internet service providers, broadcast news organizations, programmers and private enterprise customers. Hughes provides satellite broadband Internet access to North American consumers and broadband network services and systems to the domestic and international enterprise markets. Hughes also provides managed services to large enterprises and networking systems solutions to customers for mobile satellite and wireless backhaul systems. EchoStar Technologies main competitors include Motorola Mobility, Cisco (which owns Scientific Atlanta), Pace and Technicolor. Its EchoStar Satellite Services segment competes against larger, well-established satellite service companies, such as Intelsat, SES S.A. and Telesat. Hughes segment competes with a large number of telecommunications service providers. The Company is subject to comprehensive regulation by the FCC for its domestic satellite and telecommunications operations.
