Sibanye Gold Ltd was incorporated in South Africa as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gold Fields on December 12, 2002. The Company owns and operates high quality gold operations in South Africa. It currently owns and operates three underground and surface gold operations and segments, namely the Driefontein Operation and the Kloof Operation in the West Witwatersrand region and the Beatrix Operation in the southern Free State. In addition to its mining activities, it owns and manages extraction and processing facilities at its operations, which beneficiate the gold bearing ore mined. Driefontein comprises seven shaft systems mining shallow to ultra-deep-level gold bearing reef at depths of between 700m and 3,420m below surface. The shaft systems include five sub-vertical shafts and two tertiary shafts. Underground ore and low-grade surface rock dumps are processed through three metallurgical plants with a combined mill throughput capacity of approximately 5.9Mtpa. Kloof comprises five shaft systems mining intermediate to ultra-deep-level gold bearing reef at depths of between 1,300m and 3,500m below surface. The shaft systems include five operational sub-vertical shafts and one tertiary shaft. Underground ore and low-grade surface rock dumps are processed through three metallurgical plants with a combined mill throughput capacity of approximately 5.6Mtpa. Beatrix comprises three shaft systems where gold-bearing reef is mined at depths varying from 700m to 2,200m below surface. Underground ore and low-grade surface rock dumps are processed through two metallurgical plants with a combined mill throughput capacity of approximately 4.4Mtpa. It mines, extracts and processes gold ore to produce a beneficiated product, doré. The doré is then further refined at Rand Refinery Proprietary Limited into gold bars with a purity of at least 99.5%, in accordance with the Good Delivery standards as determined by the London Bullion Market Association. The refined gold is then sold on international markets. Its direct customers are bullion banks acting as intermediaries in the gold market.
