GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Superconductor Technologies Inc., was incorporated in Delaware on May 11, 1987. The Company is engaged in developing and commercializing temperature superconductor "HTS" materials and related technologies. Superconductivity has the ability to conduct various signals or energy, e.g., electrical current or radio frequency signals with little or no resistance when cooled to critical temperatures. HTS materials are a family of elements that demonstrate superconducting properties at temperatures which is warmer than previous superconducting materials. Its current commercial products help maximize the performance of wireless telecommunications networks by improving the quality of uplink signals from mobile wireless devices. It has three current product lines all of which relates to wireless base stations; SuperLink, AmpLink, and SuperPlex. SuperLink is a compact and reliable receiver front-end HTS wireless filter system to eliminate out-of-band interference for wireless base stations, combining filters with a proprietary cryogenic cooler and a cooled low-noise amplifier. AmpLink is a ground-mounted unit for wireless base stations that includes a high-performance amplifier and up to six dual duplexers. SuperPlex is a high-performance multiplexer that provides extremely low insertion loss and excellent cross-band isolation designed to eliminate the need for additional base station antennas and reduce infrastructure costs. The Company sells its current commercial products to a small number of wireless carriers in the United States, including AT&T and Verizon Wireless. It currently manufactures its SuperLink systems at its facilities in Santa Barbara, California, and components of its AmpLink and SuperPlex products are produced by foreign manufacturers. The Company's Conductus wire competes with SuperPower, SuNam, Fujikura, THEVA; and its wireless business competes with conventional RF filter manufacturers, including Alcatel-Lucent, Powerwave, and RFS and both. The Company is subject to stringent federal, state and local regulations governing the storage, use and disposal of such materials.
