GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Superconductor Technologies Inc. was incorporated in Delaware on May 11, 1987. It is engaged in the development and production of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials and associated technologies. Its initial product was completed in 1998 and it began delivery to a number of wireless network providers. Its cost reducing efforts led to the invention of its proprietary, high-yield and high throughput HTS material deposition manufacturing process. The Company has commercialized wireless products using its proprietary technology and currently focusing its efforts on this technology in superconducting power applications, RF filters and cryocoolers. The Company's current revenue comes from the design, manufacture, and sale of high performance infrastructure products for wireless communication applications. It has three current product lines related to wireless base stations: SuperLink; AmpLink; and SuperPlex. SuperLink, is a highly compact and reliable receiver front-end HTS wireless filter system to eliminate out-of-band interference for wireless base stations, combining filters with a proprietary cryogenic cooler and a cooled low-noise amplifier; AmpLink, a ground-mounted unit for wireless base stations that includes a high-performance amplifier and up to six dual duplexers; and SuperPlex, a high-performance multiplexer that provides extremely low insertion loss and excellent cross-band isolation designed to eliminate the need for additional base station antennas and reduce infrastructure costs. The Company manufactures its SuperLink systems at its facilities in Santa Barbara, California. Principal components of its AmpLink and SuperPlex products are produced by foreign manufacturers. It sells most of its current commercial products to wireless carriers in the United States, including AT&T and Verizon Wireless. The Company faces competition in various aspects of its technology and product development. With respect to its HTS wire, it competes with American Superconductor, SuperPower and THEVA, among others. Its current and potential competitors with respect to its wireless business include conventional RF filter manufacturers; include CommScope, Powerwave, and RFS. In the government sector, it competes with universities, national laboratories and both large and small companies for research and development contracts, and with larger defense contractors, such as Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, for government products.
