GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

Industry: Banks » Savings & Cooperative Banks
Compare: » details
Security Federal Corporation was incorporated under the laws of the State of Delaware in July 1987 for the purpose of becoming the savings and loan holding company for Security Federal Bank upon the Bank's conversion from mutual to the stock form. Effective August 17, 1998, the Company changed its state of incorporation from Delaware to South Carolina. Its main business is accepting deposits from the general public and originating loans. The Bank makes mortgage loans to enable borrowers to purchase or refinance one- to four-family residential real estate. The Bank also originates multi-family residential and commercial real estate loans, consumer loans, commercial business loans, as well as construction loans on single family residences, multi-family dwellings and commercial real estate, and loans for the acquisition, development and construction of residential subdivisions and commercial projects. Additional financial services are provided by three of the Bank's wholly owned subsidiaries, Security Federal Insurance, Inc., Security Federal Investments, Inc. and Security Federal Trust, Inc. On April 1, 2009, Security Federal Investments, Inc. and Security Federal Trust, Inc. were liquidated and merged into the Bank. They now operate as divisions within the Bank. It faces competition both in originating loans and in attracting deposits. Competition in originating loans comes mainly from other thrift institutions, commercial banks, mortgage bankers and credit unions that also make loans in the Bank's market area. It is subject to regulation, examination and supervision by the OTS, as its main federal regulator, and the FDIC, as its deposits insurer.
