GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Silicom.designs manufactures markets and supports server networking solutions for a range of servers and server based systems. The Company's first products were integrated circuits for information technology (or IT) manufacturers. In the early 1990s, the Company began focusing its strategy on designing, manufacturing, marketing and supporting a range of connectivity solutions for mobile and personal computers users. In subsequent years it developed several broadband internet related products. The Company's core expertise has always been its range of Ethernet and connectivity products, which provide personal computer users with solutions to their connectivity problems. In late 2002, it decided to employ its core know-how in the realm of server-based systems. The Company has developed a line of products for the server networking industry that facilitates interaction between servers, allowing them to communicate with each other through a larger number of ports and with higher performance than their original capabilities. These products allow server-based systems to fully exploit the high speed potential of Gigabit Ethernet. The products have either one, two, four or six ports, which plug into the servers between which interaction is facilitated. The products are divided into two groups: One group of products is based on Broadcom's chipset, including the PXG6, PXG4, PXG2, PXG2F, PEG1, PEG1F, PEG2, PEG4BP, PXG2BP, PXG4BP, and PXG2-ROHS. A second group is based on Intel's chipset, including the PXG6i, PXG4i, PXG2i, PXG2Fi, PXG4Fi, PXG2BPi, PXG4BPi, PXG4BPi-ROHS, PXG2BPFi and PXG4BPFi PEG2i, PEG4BPi. The Company's manufacturing operations consist mainly of producing finished goods from components and sub-assemblies purchased from third parties.
