Silicom was incorporated under the laws of Israel in 1987. The Company is engaged in the design, manufacture, marketing and support of high performance networking and data infrastructure solutions for servers, server based systems and communications devices. Its products are sold to OEM customers who offer networking appliances, servers and storage devices. The products are comprised of: High-end server network interface cards with and without bypass (Server Adapters); Intelligent and programmable cards, with features such as encryption, acceleration, data compression, redirection, time stamping and/or other offload features (Smart Adapters); Stand-alone Bypass Switches (mostly Intelligent bypass switches); and The patented SETAC (Server To Appliance Converter) product family, a solution that enables standard servers to be configured as network appliances with high-density front networking ports and easy port modularity. Smart Adapter products include server adapters such as: redirector cards, encryption and data compression hardware acceleration cards, time stamping cards, Network processor acceleration cards, and VHIO - a product off-loading virtualization switching from the CPU. The manufacturing operations consist primarily of producing finished goods from components and sub-assemblies purchased from third parties. The principal market segments for its products are: Network appliances, including WAN optimization, internet security, application delivery, Traffic Management and network monitoring; Servers; Data storage including Big Data; and The Cloud (virtualized data centers with and without SDN). With respect to Server Adapters, its competitor is Intel. In bypass cards segment, competitors are Interface Masters, Portwell/Casewell, Lanner and Adlink. In the Smart Adapters product segment, Cavium, Tilera, Netronome, Napatech, Endace (now a part of Emulex), Solarflare and Myricom are competitors. In the Intelligent Bypass Switches segment competitor is Net Optics (recently acquired by IXIA), Gigamon, and Interface Masters.
