Silicon Motion Technology Corp was incorporated in the Cayman Islands in January 27, 2005 and acquired Silicon Motion, Inc., a Taiwan corporation ('SMI Taiwan') in April 2005. It is a fabless semiconductor Company that designs, develops and markets, high-performance, low-power semiconductor solutions to original equipment manufacturers ("OEMs") and other customers in the mobile storage and mobile communications markets. The Company's products are used in smartphones, tablets, notebooks, desktop PCs and industrial and commercial applications. In mobile storage market, its products are microcontrollers used in solid state storage devices such as SSDs, eMMCs and other embedded flash applications, as well as removable storage products. It is a merchant supplier of controllers for eMMC embedded memory used in smartphones and tablets and are increasingly focused on client SSDs controllers for PCs and other applications. The Company design, develop and supply a portfolio of products that address two main markets, mobile storage and mobile communications. It sells its semiconductor solutions to original equipment manufacturers, or OEMs, and original module makers. Some of its primary competitors are in its mobile storage market include Alcor Micro, ASolid, LSI, Marvell, Phison, and Skymedi.
